The zombie craze is still going strong, showing no signs of going anywhere. If your kids love zombies as much as mine, then Zombie Dice can be a great way to sneak in some different math and logic skills!

For obvious reasons, Zombie Dice is not going to be acceptable to every family, but it’s been a favorite with ours since long before we had kids.  My husband and I were at PAX, a gaming convention that was local to us, and lots of people were playing this game while waiting in lines.  We joined in on a game, and decided we needed it!  Luckily, it was easy to purchase at PAX, and it’s been a travel favorite ever since.

Zombie Dice

There are thirteen dice in the game.  Three are red, four are yellow, and the rest are green.  Each die has shotgun blasts, brains, and running feet.  The yellow dice are even odds – two of each.  The red dice have three shotgun blasts and only one brain, and the green dice have three brains and only one shotgun blast.

To play, you pull three dice blind out of the container and roll them.  Separate out your brains, blasts, and feet.  Feet are re-rolled, with enough extra dice from the container so you’re always rolling three dice.  If you ever get three shotgun blasts, you don’t get any points that turn.  You can stop at any time, so it’s possible to win the game in one turn if you’re extra lucky.  But it’s also possible to roll up a huge number of points in a turn without getting any blasts at all, then grab three more dice and roll three shotgun blasts.

Zombie Dice is a simple game, but so excellent for teaching strategy.  As my kids get a bit older, we might even use Zombie Dice for teaching probability!  If you’re not liking the idea of a game about being a zombie, don’t fret – there are other versions, too!  A similar game but with a friendlier, less violent skin.
