Are you like me, and do you love games based on your favorite books and movies? If you do, and you have little ones, Where the Wild Things Are is a great addition to your collection! I’ve heard it’s similar to Rivers, Roads, and Rails, but not having played that game I can’t say for sure, but it seems to be. There are three suggested ways to play: creating a maze cooperatively (my kids’ favorite), racing, and a sort of dominoes game.
Apparently, I got really lucky in coming across this game at our local thrift store, as it seems to be out of print. However, you can find it on eBay.
The pieces are big, and no reading is required, making it the perfect game for preschoolers and toddlers. Even better if they know and love the book! But while they’re enjoying playing with their favorite monsters, they’ll get to practice strategy and problem-solving. However, for those of you trying to save space, note that this is a bigger box, and there’s not a lot of wasted space, so repackaging doesn’t make sense.
In this version of the game, pieces have one or two of either a path, a vine, or a creek. You need to match them up. Some pieces have one of the characters from the book on them, which can make fitting pieces more challenging. There are dead-ends, corners, and intersections.
Other than the size and the suggested age range (if you have older kids), I really can’t think of a reason to pass on Where the Wild Things Are. I guess if you hate the book, that’d be a reason. But if you’re not sure, come watch our play-through on youtube.
