In Norse mythology, Odin is the head god. He has two ravens, Huginn (Thought) and Muninn (Memory), and he sends them both around the world to bring him back the news. Every day, he sends Huginn and Muninn in opposite directions.

The premise of the game is that Huginn and Muninn get bored of this daily exercise, so come up with a friendly competition to keep things interesting. Who can make it back fastest?

How to Play Odin’s Ravens

Odin's Ravens setup

There are three different kinds of cards in Odin’s Ravens. Forty land cards build the terrain – the space that Huginn and Muninn will be flying over/through. Each player has two decks. A deck of 25 flight cards, and a deck of 8 Loki cards. The flight cards indicate what kind of terrain you can fly your raven through.

Loki is the trickster god in Norse mythology. In this game, the cards in the Loki decks allow you to turn land cards around, draw extra flight cards, remove land cards, or add extras in. You can also slide land cards, or move a raven forward or back by one space.

Is Odin’s Ravens a Strategy or Luck-Based Game?

Odin's Ravens

At its heart, Odin’s Ravens is a very simple game. You use a flight card to move through a land card of a corresponding space. However, by using the Loki cards skillfully, you turn a game of chance into one of strategy. But you only have the eight Loki cards to use; they don’t get reshuffled. So you can’t rely only on Loki cards.

I’ll admit – I really love beating my husband at this game. And, bonus points – this is a game HE bought!!  Usually, I’m the one bringing home games we don’t need and don’t have any more room for. But this time, it was him.

Odin’s Ravens is excellent for working on strategy with kids, too. Since it’s basically a simple game, you could play a few rounds open-hand. Talk through your strategy and thinking. Let your kid play their game, but don’t be afraid to let them know their options. Before too long, you can take the kid gloves off, and then watch them beat you! That might be nearly as awesome as beating my husband.

No Repackaging Needed

One final benefit of Odin’s Ravens is that it comes in a pretty small box. There is some wasted space, so I was getting ready to bag it when my husband begged me to let it keep its box. I relented, because the box is rather pretty, and we’ve been able to find a spot for it just fine.
