Coding is an important skill that even very small children can learn! As our world is more and more saturated with technology, coding is one of those skills that can only help our children. However, we don’t necessarily want our kids spending even more time on screens. That’s where these screen-free coding games come in!
The very youngest learners can start with Robot Turtles. This is a fantastic game designed for preschoolers, but it was still challenging my son when he was 7. It does depend heavily on the adult to create an obstacle course that is the correct level of difficulty.
Once students have gotten the hang of Robot Turtles, introduce them to Botley. This is a fun little coding robot, perfect for ages 6-10 or so.
Older learners will delight in the hilarious puns of Potato Pirates while they learn about conditional programs and loops.
Finally, Code Master is the perfect single-player (off-screen!) game to teach kids around 8+ about coding.
Don’t forget video games, either! There are many great ways to learn coding, including Scratch, Khan Academy, Code.org, and more! What are your family’s favorite coding games?
