Color Mix-A-Roo is the perfect game for toddlers and preschoolers working on their colors! My daughter is 6 now and still enjoys the game. Unfortunately, it appears to be out of print, but it can still be found on eBay.

How to play Color Mix-A-Roo

In Color Mix-A-Roo, players spin the spinner and flip over 1 or 2 cards, depending on what the spinner tells them to do. The other side of the spinner tells them how many colors they need to mix. If a card is flipped over that matches the number of colors needed, they get to make a color. Sometimes, there isn’t a card showing the correct number of colors, and play passes to the next player.

When I was purchasing this game, I thought it would be something with see-through, colored plastic sheets. That’s not the way this game works, but it’s still clever. Players stick their fingers in “paint” (don’t worry, this is a mess-free game!) and drag it over to the “paintbrush”, much like a rotary phone would be used. They do this for each color they think they need to create their goal color, then check to see if they made the correct color. There is also a “cheat sheet” for those still working on mixing colors. To see exactly how this mechanism works, check out our playthrough on YouTube.

Rainbow cards

There are 6 cards that, rather than having a picture with a goal color, have a rainbow. Once four of these rainbow cards are drawn, the game is supposed to be over, but it seems like every time we play, the kids want to just ignore the rainbow cards and keep playing, which I take as a good sign.

The “cheat sheet” that you can use if you want to.
Once 4 rainbow cards are drawn, the game is supposed to be over, but we usually want to keep playing.

If you have kids that are young enough, this is a solid win of a game! The cards are sturdy enough to withstand some rough play, there are no small pieces, and we’ll even be handing down our game to another family. Still not sure if this game is right for your family? Watch our play-through here!
