Are you looking for a fun trivia game for your elementary-aged students to help them learn about their bodies? Scabs and Guts is the game for you! This is a fun human body trivia game, complete with a drawn picture of the human body and its innards. There are even facts right on the board!

Scabs and Guts is for up to six players, though it wouldn’t be hard to add more. The instructions even say you can use teams if you have a lot of players. The board is modestly sized. There are a lot of trivia cards. I don’t remember how much wasted space was in our box, but this was a game I unboxed and bagged, so there was probably a fair amount.

How to play Scabs and Guts

In order to get off the space you’re on, you have to answer a trivia question. On the Start space, you get to choose whether you want Scrapes and Scabs, Blood and Guts, or Blubber or Buff. Every other space will be indicated which you have to answer (though some spaces are question marks, allowing you to pick your category again). After you correctly answer a trivia question, you get to move forward the number of spaces indicated on that card’s question.

card examples
Most of the cards are trivia, but there are also these other, easier cards.

However, not every card is a trivia card. Mixed into the card deck are cards asking you to show other players things like your fingernails (if they’re clean, you get to move ahead; if they’re dirty, you don’t get to move), cards with facts, some cards have you skip a turn or move ahead.

Alternative games

This game is similar to Totally Gross!, but there are enough differences to make having both worth it to our family. Totally Gross! is more focused on, well, the gross things in the world. And while Totally Gross! includes a lot of trivia on the human body, but there’s a lot not on the human body, too. Scabs and Guts is entirely on the human body.

Scabs and Guts rules. These were built into the box, so I had to cut them out when I bagged our game.
Scabs and Guts pawns
I love the adorable pawns! They’re even named!

Organ Attack! is also often recommended. It doesn’t seem to be very widely available, with only limited runs being made, and many counterfeit (and much lower quality games) being made. However, if you can find a genuine version of the game, I’ve heard nothing but excellent things about it.

Overall, while Scabs and Guts is a pretty simple game, I definitely think it’s worth having. There are so many trivia cards, I think it would be quite a while before you repeated any. This is definitely a great game to review information on the human body!
